Waste
Waste disposal, reducing landfill, energy roduction/independence
and the minimisation of pollution are key challenges that must be
addressed now for a secure future.
Each year UK households, commerce and industry
combined generate about 100 million tonnes of waste. Most of this
currently ends up in landfill, where biodegradable waste generates
methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. A lot of much valuable energy
is used up in making new products which are later disposed of, also
contributing to climate change. Effective waste management and recycling
is just part of a viable solution in combating these issues. The
generation of electrical energy from waste destined for landfill
complements this with benefits to all.
The cost of disposing of commercial waste and
Landfill Tax is rising considerably each year (with Landfill Tax
rising to £56 per tonne by 2011). As of October 2008, the
European Landfill Directive has meant that waste cannot be sent
directly to landfill and must be recycled prior to its ultimate
disposal.
The UK Government is proposing that 5% of UK electricity needs should
be met by utilising such renewable energy sources as energy from
waste by the end of 2003 and 10% by 2010, as long as the cost to
consumers is acceptable.
Our world has finite resources and with unparalleled
population growth and a continued demand for electrical energy we
need to change the way in which developed societies consume energy
and materials and dispose of waste.
Renewable sources of energy can make an important
contribution to securing sustainable and diverse energy supplies
and are therefore an essential element of a cost-effective climate
change programme.
